Case Study 1: Odor Control

Foul and irritable odors pose a major issue to the employees, residents and neighbors and in most cases can affect the health of the individuals. Odor pollution is majorly caused by industrial plant emissions, wastewater treatment, pulp and paper mills, petrochemical industries, livestock operations, and so on.

One of the major biopharmaceutical company customers in Bangalore was facing a major issue with odor generated from their cell biomass digesters. This odor was causing discomfort to their employees and other facilities neighboring the company.

An air quality test done on the outlet of the existing scrubber reported unusually high concentrations of VOCs and H2S which inferred that the existing scrubber was not removing the odor effectively. This equipment housed activated carbon media which had lost its physical properties because of the moisture and high gas concentration.

Replacement with Purafil Chemical Media

We replaced this media with a combination of Purafil Puracarb (PCB) and Purafil SP (PSP) media. PCB is an activated carbon-based chemically engineered media with proprietary binders and PSP is activated alumina impregnated with 12% Sodium permanganate and other chemical binders. PSP is the only chemical media in the market to have the highest gas removal capacity for a range of different gases. Please click on the hyperlinks to see the removal capacities.

Further, the scrubber was kept in continuous operation and another air quality test was performed. This test showed a significant reduction in odorous gases. The results are as below:

Purafil Inc. is an American-based gas-phase filtration solution provider. They design and manufacture patented chemically engineered activated carbon-based and activated alumina-based chemical media. These media are designed to specifically remove problematic gases through a process called “Chemisorption” where the gases are adsorbed, absorbed, and rendered chemically inactive to base salts so that there is no residual off-gassing of the gases. Purafil chemical media has the highest gas removal capacity in the market which means that less media is required to remove the gases and helps us manufacture more compact equipment which saves space and is cost-effective for the customer.

At Ripple Effect, we provide comprehensive solutions from gas reactivity measurement, to gas-phase filtration, to continuous monitoring to control corrosion, odor, and toxic gases.
